FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FAQ (General)

Q) How long is the admission procedure?

A) It differs for different Colleges / Universities. Approximate time period would be 5 to 8 weeks after the application. However KSMT tries it's best to get the University's response about students' acceptance earlier.

Q) Why Kathmandu School of Medical Technology for my abroad studies?

Q) Where can I obtain foreign exchange for my studies in China?

A) We will organize to have your foreign exchange issued as well as have your fees remitted through any of the commercial bank in Nepal. Ministry of Education's NO Objection letter is required to get this facility

Q) Does the student have to be present personally for an interview at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate for the issuance of the visa?

A) As part of the services offered by KSMT, the passport of the student would be submitted by KSMT to the visa section and the student generally is not required to appear for a personal interview (unless until the embassy or consulate demands in rare occasions).

Q) Is medical treatment available in the Universities?

A) All students who join any university are required to take a medical insurance from a Chinese Insurance Company. The insurance scheme should be taken at the time of joining the University, which covers risks related to hospitalization and accidents only. However, out patients bills won't be covered under this general insurance scheme.

Q) How do I make my travel arrangements?

A) It is very important for the student to strictly make all his travel arrangements as per the instructions of KSMT. This is to ensure that all the students reach the University in a group as per the instructions of the International Students Department of the University. Therefore, kindly seek assistance from KSMT for your travel arrangements and book your tickets only from KSMT approved travel agents to ensure that there are no miscommunications with regards to the travel dates.

Q) How much time will be taken to fly to China?

A) 6 to 10 hours depending upon your place of origin and final destination. Normally it takes 5:30 hour to reach Guangzhou from Kathmandu. From Guangzhou about an hour flight is enough to reach either Yichang or Wuhan.

Q) How much is the airfare?

A) Approx. USD 500-600 is enough for one way travel from Kathmandu to Yichang. Normally 20 kg of luggage is allowed in the flight.

Q) Who would receive the students once they land at Chinese airport?

A) The representatives of the concerned University would be at the airport to receive the incoming students. He/She would be at the exit of the airport well in advance with a placard having the name of the University. He/She would then guide the student to the transport which would take the student to his/her University hostel where the student would unload his/her luggage to the room allotted by the University. Normally one companying person will be there right from the place of origin.

Q) How often can we come to our hometown during the whole course duration?

A) The Universities have two vacations in a year, winter (Jan-Feb) and summer (July-Aug). Students are allowed to come to their hometown in each vacation. We recommend the students take summer as their main vacation.

Q) Does a student need to come back home during the vacations?

A) A student need not come back home every year during the vacation. He/She can stay back in China and explore the beautiful country. He should however inform the University accordingly.

Q) Are we provided with good hostel facilities?

A) Yes. The hostel facilities provided in China are of international standards.

Q) What about safety?

A) There is round the clock security in the University. The timing and discipline in the hostels are strictly monitored.

Q) Are my personal belongings at the hostel insured?

A) No, your personal belongs including cash, mobile phones, etc., are not insured and the safe keeping of the same are your own personal responsibility. In an event of any theft, the same should be immediately brought to the notice of the Student Affair Office and Department of International Relations of the University.

Q) How do I contact my parents or friends down in Nepal?

A) China may seem a long way from home, but, thanks to its excellent communication services, you will find it easy to keep in touch with your family and friends. With the growing number and variety of telephone and other communication services, you will have no trouble staying in close contact with your family and friends.

Telephone services

Public telephones are card operated. Prepaid cards are available in China and you can buy them from newsagents, post offices and supermarkets. You can also use the international telephone services at different outlets in the city. Mobile phones are widely used in China and can be particularly convenient for the students. Students are advised to carry a reasonably priced GSM mobile phone along with them to China and use a pre-paid card for communication. Compare cards carefully as the rates may differ. In some cases, making your international call using these prepaid cards would be cheaper than using the main phone service provider.

E-mail

Internet usage is widespread in China. If you have your own computer, you can sign up directly from your hostel connection. A nominal charge will have to be paid for this service. Dormitories provide Internet service in each room. It would be a wise idea to check the availability of the service with the International Students Affair Office of the University.

Q)To whom the student contacts in China if he/she has any queries or problems at the University/hostel?

A)Students need to understand that you have been admitted to a professional course in China. You are now staying away from your parents and are expected to be a responsible person. Do not expect to be spoon-fed. As a responsible student you are expected to do your best to contact the relevant authorities at the University / hostel to solve your problem. University has an International Students Affair Office where the student can put their problems directly. The general working hours of the International Students Affair Office are from 8 am to 5:30 pm; Monday to Friday. 24-hour duty staff shall be available in the dormitory. You would also note and appreciate that KSMT would not be able to liaison your day-to-day matters on your behalf.

Q) Does KSMT have an office in China?

A) Of course we have our office and one of our staffs will be there all the time. Above all, many staff are working in the university to co-ordinate the program and for the welfare of our students.

Q) Does KSMT refund the processing fee paid, should a student opt out of the admission process after applying to a higher educational institution in China?

A) The students and their parents should appreciate that all information and the counseling is done by KSMT is free of charge. There are expenses which are borne by KSMT not only to get the information of higher education in China to you, but also in terms of processing and forwarding the application to the University and to liaison with them on your behalf.
All the terms and conditions for the application are clearly stated in the brochure and also in all our communications wherever applicable. Therefore, once you apply to any university it is clearly implied and taken into granted that the student and the parents have verified and are satisfied with all the information gathered from KSMT and have applied for education in China based on this verification and satisfaction. It is also implied and understood that the parents or the guardians have made all arrangements to have sufficient arrangements to finance the education. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (MEDICAL)

Q) Are the medical degrees from Chinese Universities recognized?

A) All the medical colleges/universities in China are operated under the supervision of Central government (Ministry of Education) or Provincial government (Provincial Education Bureau). Almost all the colleges are well-recognized worldwide. To be recognized in the respective country the individual should follow the admission requirement of the respective country.
Post graduate courses are also recognized provided the duration of course is as per the requirements of NMC, i.e., minimum 3 years residential course. China Three Gorges University is recognized by ECFMG and the graduates from these universities can sit for USMLE. See the useful links for details.

Q) What are the differences between the courses offered in the two Universities?

A) There is no basic difference in the course curriculum, duration and recognition of the degree. However, China Three Gorges University follows South-Asian course curriculum merged in the Chinese curriculum. Most of the textbooks followed at CTGU are international. The degrees offered by CTGU is equivalent to the degrees offered anywhere in the world.

Q) Are we permitted to do our internship in Nepal?

A) In Nepal, students enrolled in and before 2007 in China can do their internship. Students enrolled after 2008 should complete their internship at the country where they get MBBS degree. In India, students are allowed to do internship in India after they pass MCI screening test.

Q) Can we practice in Nepal as well as in Abroad?

A) Yes, Chinese Universities are well renowned world wide and have a greater acceptance now a day. Our college is listed with ECFMG (www.ecfmg.org). For most of the countries students have to pass license examination of the respective country.

Q) Is it necessary to study Chinese language?

A) Though the medium of instruction is English, the students will have to study the Chinese Language in order to communicate with the patients in the department and hospital. Hence Chinese language class is kept right from first semester through seventh/eighth semester.

Q) Does the college have a library?

A) There is a 6-story library building in campus fully loaded with books, periodicals and journals. There is electronic library as well as separate section of medical books in English language. A wide range of textbooks and reference books are available in the library.
